Enhanced automated deceptive and phishing site detection

Enhanced automated deceptive and phishing site detection

Today we are pleased to announce a welcome enhancement to the Website Category API which boosts our deceptive and phishing site detection!

The initial “deceptive” category was released back in March of 2018 and is actively being used to protect users from zero-day phishing attacks. This latest update adds a new layer of protection against threats which pretend to be well-known legitimate sites. Here are two good examples of phishing sites that are pretending to be official Microsoft resources:

Fake Microsoft Login Site
Fake Microsoft Login Site
Fake Microsoft Support Site
Fake Microsoft Support Site

Deceptive sites like the ones shown above use various tactics to avoid detection, including the use of static images, as well as obfuscating the Javascript and HTML files on a webpage. Our enhanced artificial intelligence scanner is able to see through tactics like these and identify fake sites as they are encountered.

If you are using the Category API or our self-hosted category database service, no changes are needed on your part to begin taking advantage of these new features as it is already active.

Happy (and safe) categorizing!
